Hi there Thanks for visiting me in my little corner of cyberspace. The idea is to record all the crazy ideas I decide to attempt…
That’s dramatic.
They’re not all that crazy. Some are downright popular lately … sourdough anyone? I promise to show you the things that turn out… and the ones that don’t. No highlight reel here friends, this is real life.
I’m an accountant by trade and a creative person. Getting too creative at work might get me in trouble, so I need an outlet. Honestly, and I try to always be honest, I’m hoping to help people see that it’s not hard, or expensive to do better for your family. I want to take better care of my husband and home and plan stuff and make stuff and grow stuff! Sounds like soul satisfying work to me.
I love Jesus. I don’t know why He chose me, but He did. I am so thankful for the freedom He died to give me and for His redeeming grace. I am a deeply flawed human… but God. He’s picked me out of my work-related despair and has given me what I can best describe as joy “bubbling” in my heart, even despite my current work circumstance, and “peace that makes no sense” (Phillipians 4:7). Don’t worry, I won’t try to shove Him down your throat (because, I mean… that won’t work), but if you don’t know Him, you are missing out!
I also love Jess. She’s amazing! She’s the girl that made me an auntie and is good at so many things. She is always trying things and putting plans together. She lives with her family and my parents (her grandparents) at “the farm” and has a small flock of chickens. She also loves to write and I thought she’d be a great partner in this little venture… and she agreed! Yay! I’m so looking forward to working with her.
I like to live a natural life and try to maintain healthy habits… mostly… I’m not too rigid about it. Moderation is good – and healthy! I think it’s important to think about what we put in and on our bodies. I think most people underestimate how much their diet impacts their physical and mental health and overall wellbeing and underestimate how much getting a little exercise every day improves everything else in life.
I keep bees, grow a small garden and like to help in the (bigger) gardens of those who have the space… practice for when we have our own big space, I’m thinking. Will I ever be able to sell Husband on a homestead complete with animals? Not sure… he’s only agreed to a “someday” dog so far. But I have hope. In the meantime I’ll be practising, and building skills. Better to start slow and get ready, than to never start at all.

heyyy, I’m Jess!
Welcome to Slowstart Homestead I’m so glad you’re here! I am so happy to be sharing this page with my beautiful, amazing, and creative aunt! When she pitched the idea of starting a blog together to me I wasn’t sure I had much to write about but once I started, I realized I’m not too bad at talking, so hopefully you guys won’t mind listening!
I also LOVE Jesus and am currently living on a farm with my family in Ontario, Canada, although I was raised most of my life in northern British Columbia. Four years ago I bought 40 Black Australorp Chickens from a farmer a couple of hours away and since then I have learned A LOT about chickens AND chicks. This is my third year incubating and selling my hatched chicks and I LOVE it!
My side of this blog will be for all the chicken/chick lovers out there who are either just starting their flock or have had theirs much longer than me. I will also write about many other things related to hobby farming!
I will be Graduating High School in June 2024 and am not quite sure what to after… but I would love it to be something we do with this blog and everything we will be talking about here!
