Planting Garlic in the Fall

Blog Posts

This might look like it’s just a blob of Straw and really it is… but the important part is what’s underneath! The answer to that is Garlic Cloves! That’s right, this blob of straw is our garlic which will be ready in the summer.

We planted garlic last year around late October early November for the first time and had a very bountiful harvest come August.

At this point you may be like “okay but what is the straw for?” It is to keep the weeds at bay and protect them through the winter!

“What do I need to plant garlic?”

  1. First of all you will need a little patch of dirt
  2. some garlic bulbs
  3. A trowel (mini shovel)
  4. Lastly, we recommend some kind of mulch!

“How far apart should I plant my garlic?”

We planted our garlic about six inches in between each bulb and 10 inches in between each row.

“How far down should I plant my garlic?”

We plant our Garlic about two inches below the ground,(so once the cloves are covered there should be about two inches of dirt above the planted cloves.

Once you have your garlic cloves planted go ahead and cover the planted area in some kind of mulch. Personally we use straw because it works well for us and we have lots of it!
