Homemade Deodorant recipe for crunchy mamas

Blog Posts

So I have friend, we’ll call Lauren.  Lauren and I were chatting the other day and she, knowing me to be a rather crunchy, toxin-avoiding girl, asked me about deodorant. After she graciously listened to my rant about my most recent brand that I had discovered sold out to a big conglomerate who decided to substitute fragrance oil, the most toxic ingredient in many cosmetics, for the essential oils that had been used, I told her that I had some recipes pinned, that I wanted to try, if she was willing to let her growing children be my guinea pigs!

Like a good friend, she is always down for my shenanigans… and for allowing her kids to be my stinky little guinea pigs.  I just delivered it over the weekend, so time will tell if it works for them, but I also made sure to also save a bit to try for myself.

I tried the recipe Zero Waste Deodorant Without Baking Soda – Greenify Me (greenify-me.com) and I like it! I wasn’t sure at first; I don’t find the scent of tea tree particularly pleasant. But I know it has antibacterial effects and bacteria stinks, so I think it’s a necessary ingredient.

I also found it turned out a bit too soft, so next time I think I’ll try it with less coconut oil (2Tbsp instead of 3), and a bit more arrowroot powder.

I’m fairly happy with my scent blend though:

5 drops tea tree, 5 drops lemongrass, 5 drops peppermint, 20 drops orange (orange 5 fold=an extra concentrated orange essential oil).  I’ve been enjoying the mainly orang-y scent when putting it on in the morning, though husband doesn’t love the scent of this.  I think he smells things funny, although he is a great chef (no, that’s not his day job, but he is MY chef) and since smell and taste are so closely connected, maybe it isn’t his nose afterall….  So what’s your favourite crunchy mama deodorant?

– Beck
