So, I like to make stuff, and have realized that a lot of the reason behind my desire to make stuff is to save some money. For instance, Husband has decided that he likes a particular soap brand that he doesn’t bat an eye at paying $9. a bar for (!) That hurts my frugal little heart. The first batch he bought looked like it had pretty good ingredients – like plant oils, so of course I liked that, but also I thought, “I can make that!” So I found an essential oil blend that I thought sounded good and I bought some sustainably sourced palm oil and olive oil and lye and essential oils (EO), and used the coconut oil already in my pantry to make a lovely sudsy and natural soap! (thank you Basic 3-Oil Soap Recipe (thesprucecrafts.com) for the base soap recipe, it really is a very lovely soap) … And Husband thought it smelled like Pinesol…
So I used up that one, and went back to the drawing board. A couple of batches later and I’m back to that original Sprucecrafts recipe, but with a different EO blend, and I made one that is nice and minty – it has spearmint and patchouli essential oils. Mmmmmmm! Smells nice and minty to me!
… He still smells Pinesol. Sad. I’m holding out hope that once it’s fully cured and we can start using it (2 weeks to go!) that he will like the scent better, especially because in subsequent orders of his favored brand, I realized that they were using fragrance… did you know that fragrance is often one of the most toxic elements of personal care products? Husband has a very sensitive nose and scent is a big priority for him, whereas my priority is not poisoning us. Haha. We are not quite on the same page as far as natural living goes, but he is quite accommodating and is open to the possibility that I will find a soap recipe we can both enjoy. And so the hunt continuesl… Have you tried making soap? What’s your favorite recipe and/or scent blend? Do you, in general, like to make stuff? If so, what’s your primary motivation for making?
